 | Protecting your child from internet tragedy.
Given the rise in pedophile luring and abduction, prescription drug abuse by minors, selling prescription drugs on social networks, chat room bullying by students and conversations of suicide, responsible parents and guardians MUST be conscious and aware of their children conversations and actions on the internet, in order to protect them from harm.
It is an agonizing decision to, on the one hand, wanting to give your child trust and responsibility, as well as a feeling of having their own space, without invading their privacy. But on the other hand, you as a parent need to monitor their internet activity in case something goes wrong. Being a parent has many rewards and by all accounts, is one of the most difficult challenges and responsibilities you could have. Drawing a line between your responsibility as a parent or guardian and your child's privacy, education and safety is a difficult one.
Personally, I am of the opinion that a minor child has no legal rights, but only educational and supervised privileges given by the parent. It's a matter of trust when privileges are given based on the level of maturity demonstrated by the child. These privileges are earned by demonstrating maturity and appropriate actions. When a child has violated this trust, the removal of privilege must be the consequence.
